Facebook tidbits:

1) For those interested, there's a Save Realms of Fantasy group.

2) Is anyone else unhealthily obsessed with Green Patch? It's like virtual crack to my borderline-OCD-obsessive-collector-self: "OMG! OMG! I don't have a Venus Fly Trap!" (panics and dies) Strangely, I just don't care about the Blue Cove.

Other stuff:

3) Does anyone know if there's any specific code in terms of having to have a hand-rail on a particular side of a stairwell? My basement stairs is closed w/ a rail on both sides and I want to take out one of the rails to facilitate installing a baby gate there.

4) Does anyone know enough physics and have the patience and time to walk me through figuring out some fairly specific things about the behavior of my planetary system? I'm not looking for someone to do it all for me, but I do need guidance (and possibly math skills beyond my own.)

5) Anyone have a variety of rose they are particularly fond of and would like to see referenced in a short story?

Your house is a "One or Two Family Dwelling", so this comes under the Mass. Building Code 3603.14.1.1, Handrails: "Handrails having minimum and maximum heights of 30 inches and 38 inches (762 mm and 965 mm), respectively, measured vertically from the nosing of the treads, shall be provided on at least one side of stairways of three or more risers."

So you can take out one of the rails as long as you leave the other one.

1 - I've been linking to the Save RoF group, too - thank you. We can all certainly try, at least.

2 - FACEBOOK is like crack, for me, especially when I'm in work-avoidance mode. But the Green Patch eventually keeps dragging me back. You know you can arrange your plants by color, if you're inclined? Not that I...what I mean is...well, just sayin'.

3 - A stair rail on both sides mostly makes it convenient to use the hand you're most comfortable using on the rail, both directions. (If you're missing a hand, I reckon this would be a bigger deal than otherwise.) And mlp367 already found the applicable bit of Mass. code.

4 - Oh hell - I don't even have enough physics to trust gravity isn't going to suddenly fail like a blown light bulb. Sometimes I wake up in the night and sort of wait and hope that it might. So far, no joy.

5 - There's always the Li'l Green Patch variety of rose... *G*

I haven't read it, but World Building by Stephen Gillett and Ben Bova may cover what you need. (Apparently, you're supposed to take the title literally.) Also, maybe Kepler's laws of planetary motion?

I cannot deal with the FB patches or the coves or the anythings. I have something like 56 requests backed up on FB right now. Meh. I liked them better with the old FB style where your patch was on your main page. But now, it's just not interesting! I am a classic example of "if it's not in front of your face it doesn't exist."

I love the green patch on facebook too - but I haven't had time to do any of them. I don't like the cutesy kid-looking flowers though. As for the rose, my favorite has always been Tropicana, a kind or coral colored rose. I always thought it was a floribunda, but apparently it is a hybrid tea. Mr. Lincoln (a deep red rose), First Prize (a huge pink rose)Pascali (fragrant white rose). A nice list of names of roses can be found here (MSU listing), and at the Jackson & Perkins website.
