Pride and Prejudice is not just my favorite Jane Austen, it's one of my favorite books. There's *a lot* more to it than appears at first or second reading - it's fun, fast-paced, romantic, and full of surprises. Sense and Sensibility comes a close second for me. I've just started to read Northanger Abbey, but that's not a book that's easy to get into; it doesn't take itself very seriously at all.
I happened to pick up a copy of P&P lying on a friend's coffee table - the first few pages really tickled me, so I borrowed the book. I loved it to death, which was completely unexpected.
(Came across Barry Hughart's Bridge of Birds the same way - same friend, same coffee table, same result.)
