A little less than half-way through chapter 8, and it's not really what I want right now. Already I can tell that most, if not all, the words here won't make it to the end of a second draft. That said, right now sort of going with it is opening up some options I hadn't seen before, adding some complexity I'd missed, and suggesting some flaws in my characters' characters that bring them just a little bit more up into 3D in my head, so even a worst-case scenario -- I toss the whole chapter come December 1st -- it's been a good exercise and will contribute, even if indirectly, to the quality of the whole novel.
Or, put another way, "this shit stinks, but it's giving me ideas..."
Hopefully a good night's sleep and a day of work tomorrow will give the backbrain some time to toss this around a bit, and make more obvious the next step forward (even if that's a step back.)
