(
Damn, I want to try that...)
In other news, since they've been kind enough to let me fill a few pages for them in the past, I sent the pirate story off to Interzone. Hopefully it's not too "American" -- while it takes place waaaaay out in space in the future, there are some small but necessary-to-the-plot references to what has happened to the ol' USofA in the intervening centuries. Also, there's some Elvis in it.
I've been tinkering with a number of things, though still not quite ready to declare my writing sabbatical over.
Miledrop hasn't grown any longer, but has gotten a bit fuller. The momentum is building to near-critical for tackling the next chapter. I've written about 1100 words of
Tucker's Fall, a probably-novelette-length thing that's been in my head for years now:
( first-drafty excerptoid )Likewise, Verah and Sofi (characters from
Concession Girl who aren't ready to retire yet) have taken up a small amount of my attention, though I'm not at all sure where this is going. I've also been slowly collecting details about the various planets, aliens, people, etc., that have been in my stories thus far and getting it all properly documented in my private Wiki. This was precipitated by Verah and Sofi telling me they were on a beach on Coralla, and me not remembering how many moons I'd given that planet the last time I used it (three, as it turns out). Wikis can become extraordinary cat-vacuuming, but if you're writing a whole bunch of galaxy-spanning space opera stuff and trying to keep your universe consistent between stories, they also become rapidly indispensible. It's the initial population of the thing that's the biggest killer.
Additionally, Verah and Sofi have hinted at where they're going to end up a few stories away from now, and I don't see how that can be less than novel-length. Augh!
Must finish
Miledrop first. Still would like to see if I can turn the mangled disaster that is
Arcx into something worthwhile too.
...yeah, though, still not fully back in the game yet. Honest.
In other notes,
my building is getting taller!
