Giant Mystery Blob at the Dawn of Time!

Great potential short story title, but in fact it's a news item.

Got a call this morning from a coworker just as I was heading out the door telling me not to come to work. Apparently they've found a bomb in one of the buildings on campus (not my building, fwiw). Our local NPR station -- which I had on for over a half hour while trying to drag my sorry ass out of bed, and which is physically located ON campus -- was too busy pledging and couldn't be bothered to interrupt said proceedings to actually tell anyone that.

Will let folks know if it turns out to be a Mooninite. Meanwhile, going back to bed for an hour or so -- stayed up waaaay too late watching the game last night.

Okay, thinning antarctic ice sheets is disturbing enough news, but did you hear that all the bees are disappearing?

This completely freaks me out:
David Bradshaw has endured countless stings during his life as a beekeeper, but he got the shock of his career when he opened his boxes last month and found half of his 100 million bees missing.

In 24 states throughout the country, beekeepers have gone through similar shocks as their bees have been disappearing inexplicably at an alarming rate, threatening not only their livelihoods but also the production of numerous crops, including California almonds, one of the nation’s most profitable.

“I have never seen anything like it,” Mr. Bradshaw, 50, said from an almond orchard here beginning to bloom. “Box after box after box are just empty. There’s nobody home.”

If you haven't already seen this:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/03/17/petfood.recall.ap/index.html
Menu Foods -- a major manufacturer of dog and cat food sold under Wal-Mart,
Safeway, Kroger and other store brands -- recalled 60 million containers of wet
pet food Friday after reports of kidney failure and deaths.

An unknown number of cats and dogs suffered kidney failure and about 10 died
after eating the affected pet food, the company said in announcing the North
American recall.

Also, apparently, this involves some Iams and Eukanuba.

Nutro Max and Nutro Natural Choice is the brand of dry food I usually feedmy dogs, though it seems like it's only the wet food that's a problem (?). I've got a couple of cans of the Nutro Natural Choice wet food left but it's unopened as I've switched over to Merrick lately, which doesn't appear to be on the list.

Anyway, sounds like they don't have the full info yet on what's happening, so if you have cats or dogs I'd keep a close eye on this. Certainly, my dogs are going to miss their usual wet food tonight and have to suffer with just the dry.

(My apologies to my non-North American friends for the bandwidth...)

from boingboing, this is the funniest damn thing I've read in a long time.

Read to the end. It just keeps getting better and better. Isn't that right, donkey?
