zanzjan: (iggy)
So the untitled flesh-eating bacteria story is officially out of short story territory at 8000 words, and still really just getting started. I find myself wondering if, just by length alone, I've already doomed this story to sit in the dusty pile of the unwanted along with the Titanic story and the space pirates story, and that makes me sad (especially as those are some of my favorite stories that I've written.)

It also makes me wonder, if I'm going to hit 25-30k with it, if (oh gods, I cringe just hearing myself type these words) I wouldn't be better off making it into a novel. I truly feel I'm at my best writing novel-length works, but they're breaking my heart (current novel on submission: 1241 days.) But really, are novels more salable than novellas, assuming comparable quality? I just don't know. Certainly it's hard enough placing a short story over 6k, much less anything longer, and I've been very lucky that Interzone seems to like me.

Eh. It's past my bedtime. If I was going to do this, and I'm absolutely NOT saying I am, I'd have to think about the structure a whole lot more, and I probably couldn't just wing my way through the plot like I am right now. Best to wait until my writer group gets back to me with round one of feedback, though of course I've already given them strict instructions that they're not allowed to tell me to turn it into a novel. Forward-thinking, that. )-:
