I should note that I understand that there are moderate Republicans who are at least somewhat rational. I think, however, that the center of the political spectrum is more solidly inside the Democratic Party than the Republican (for better or worse I don't want to get into) and it also seems to me that the moderate Republicans are heavily marginalized within their own party. Certainly there were stories about moderates who were threatened during the Bush Years that if they didn't vote on party lines that the GOP would put up and back a more conservative candidate against them next election to come 'round. Which, y'know, definitely put people in a hard place.

Whether or not they were willingly a part of the Republican Machine -- and certainly a few bowed out or have stood on their principles against their own party -- really determines whether or not I'm taking about them in my previous rant.
