zanzjan: (burping rabbit)
After work yesterday afternoon, after I'd picked the babies up from daycare and was on my way home, a pickup truck pulled out into the road in front of me. This was one of those big farm pickup-trucks, with the double wheels in back and double cab and looking distinctly like it was in heavy, regular use, so, y'know, not just someone's compensatory toy. The thing that was remarkable about this wasn't the truck itself so much as what was *in* it -- namely, a ,very large fake boulder. Seriously, the thing was about the size of a small van and it completely filled the back of the truck with rock to spare.

From what I could see it was also well-constructed; the texture was believably rock, and the only two things that absolutely gave it away as fake was that it was perfectly flat along the bottom, and that the truck wasn't being crushed to the pavement under it. In fact the truck was making good speed, other than traffic lights, and was generally going 10-20mph over the speed limit ahead of me, which means I did eventually lose him. If I hadn't, it would have been sorely tempting to follow him and ask him about how he'd managed the texture, since I've got a couple of fake rock projects of my own that have been on long-term hold pending time to experiment with materials.

Anyway, before he got so far ahead of me that I couldn't see him anymore, we went through a small town-center with some curvy road bits, and as the truck passed through I watched a jogger coming the other way turn his head to stare with some amazement as the truck went past, and completely fail to notice the real estate for-sale sign on the lawn in front of him.

Pthwack!

It does make one consider the sorts of odd things that one might enjoy driving around in one's big-ass truck for the delightful detriment to the distractable denizens of one's small town.

ETA: I did try to take a photo of it, but it was raining out (which is probably why he was speeding -- fake rock was maybe not waterproof) and the guy really got away from me fairly quickly, and the pic came out like crap. Too crappy to bother with, at least. Sorry )-:
