May. 30th, 2010 11:14 pmI let my teen have the computer for an hour or two yesterday, and in the course of her surfing she managed to pick up 21 viruses. To my complete lack of surprise, McAfee didn't catch a single one of them. Nor was it able to spot them once the computer had been infected, cheerfully telling me my system was clean even when I knew otherwise.
Now, I have McAfee on my computer because I get it for free, and honestly, it's not worth what I pay for it. I think it's caught maybe one thing in the last year? Could be two, though the more I think about it I think it caught the same virus twice.
(Norton is also complete and utter crap.)
If you're relying on McAfee to keep your system safe, take this as a cautionary warning: in my experience, McAfee is about as good at keeping viruses and spyware off my computer as my 16-year-old, deaf, blind-in-one-eye, severe-heart-condition cat would be at keeping my house safe if it was attacked by a helicopter full of uzi-wielding terrorists. And my cat has other redeeming qualities. (And terrorists are far more unlikely than viruses.)
