notes from the daily commute
Aug. 20th, 2010 12:22 amSo I was on my way home from work today, and as I was driving along I spotted up ahead a pickup truck at a side road waiting to pull out. It was one of those giant pickups -- double cab with the full back seat, wide bed with double wheels in the back -- and the window behind the driver was rolled down, and there was a big shaggy head sticking out of it.
Wow, thought I, that's a big dog.
As a point of reference, my own sweet dog, who I tend to regard as "medium" -- ie, all dogs smaller than her are small*, and all dogs bigger than her are big, and all dogs the same size as her are "just right" -- weighs in at 115 lbs (a little over 52kg), so when I see a dog and think "big", that's when most people would think "effing ginormous".
So as I got closer, I was curious as to what type of dog it was. My initial expectation was that it would be a St. Bernard. Whooo, was I wrong.
You see, it turns out it wasn't a dog at all.
It was a horse.
Yes, the guy had one of those miniature horses riding in the backseat of his car with its head stuck out the passenger window. Alas, by the time I realized what it was, it was too late to get the camera out.
---
* and any dog that's either the size of things my dog coughs up, or closely resembles the pile of fur I get from a 10-minute skritch of her belly, just isn't a dog.
