So, over on Facebook, where I seem to do nothing but argue, someone had posted in part of an ongoing discussion about that guy who was whining about not being able to afford his life on his $250k+ salary and defended this guy by saying that if he'd posted about coming out of the closet, rather than trying to pay his massive student loans for attending Overprivileged-U, none of us would be jumping all over him, and that she "suspect[s] that coming out - no matter how traumatic it might be - is frankly a lot easier than getting to an M.D. in pediatric oncology or achieving the kind of legal background that gets you a professorship at the University of Chicago, paying off all the resulting loans, and simultaneously raising a family in a big city with a high tax rate."

To which I was unable to not respond: "I'm fairly certain no one has been beaten to death for coming out as an oncologist."

Her reply: "I think your random gay guy/gal in the modern United States is in a better position than the random guy/gal who has just graduated from med school with $150k in debt and the prospect of "Obamacare" and sky high personal tax rates, but that's just me..."

Me again: "seriously, are you saying that student loan payments (for loans taken on voluntarily) are a worse thing than knowing that at any moment someone could kill you for who you are? That you won't be allowed to marry the person you love unless you're lucky enough to live in one of a handful of states, and then knowing there are people actively trying to take away that right and annul your marriage? That people will advocate for taking your children away from you, if you have them? Really, student loan payments are worse? Do you actually know any gay people? Maybe you should talk to them."

Her: "Killed for who you are? What, do these folks live in Afghanistan? The reason the left keeps bringing up Matthew Shepherd is that there aren't that many other modern American examples . And, no, I don't frankly give a shit about marriage rights (gay, straight, otherwise) unless children are involved. Yes, I do think having one's children taken away is a Big Deal, but I'm not convinced that this is an Anti-Gay Conspiracy without specific details."

So, people: links, please? Thanks.

ETA:
It seems the other person has walked away from the discussion. Thanks for the links, people; I can't sit at the computer except for short stretches (bruised my tailbone, something I don't recommend.)
