Day 5 total: 1247
NaNoCheaMo total: 10200
Novel total: 50,938 (manuscript wordcount)

Once again didn't make the daily quota of 1667 words, eroding more of the good head-start I had going a few days ago. Still more than a day ahead, but barely.

My hapless main character takes an awful lot of abuse, poor guy.

I was just sitting here with my morning cup of tea checking my email while the sprogs are distracted watching their favorite DVD ("Mighty Machines" -- OMG, does Canada have NO competent voice-actors?!?) when, out of the blue, I finally figured out how this one small but absolutely key thing in my current novel actually works. Sweet!

I've been trying to figure that out since I first started this story (as a short) probably close to a year ago now, and had pretty much given up in despair that I was going to handwave something minimally plausible or, never desirable, try to write enough holes in around it that it's not such a single glaring omission, so I am more than a little happy about this (-:

It's amazing how often lately I'm reading some random comment thread and I run across a short, sharply-pointed comment that makes me immediately say "OUCH!" and at the same time think how concisely it sums up my own, far less articulate feelings on the topic at hand, only to then discover the commenter is Nick Mamatas.

One hopes to always be in his audience and yet never in the spotlight of his ire.

I strongly believe that getting rid of a lot of stuff all at once triggers some sort of self-defense mechanism of the Universe and prompts it to shove something, anything, into whatever material void you've just created.

For example, last time I went on a great big decluttering binge, and got rid of a crappy dresser and old clothes and some other random stuff, I ended up bringing home a 10' inflatable igloo.

This week has seen another concerted effort to get rid of things, including several bags of baby clothes, books, old mugs, bath salts I'll never use, a houseplant I didn't have room for, random hardware, and a whole bunch of other crap. So the Universe gave me this: )
