"timeless tales"

Right off the top of my head:
Watership Down by Richard Adams
Phantom Tollboth by Norton Juster
Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak
And you know what? They are still among my favorites. I had joked that if the twins were both girls I was going to name them Rhyme and Reason, and although I probably wouldn't actually have done so the temptation would have been huge. (Likewise, if my dog had been male, she may very well have been named Tock.)
Why? Aside from being fantastic books, the only big thematic thing I can think of that they have in common is that they're about leaving somewhere mundane and finding magic and adventure, and then finding your way home to somewhere better, or as someone better. Read into that what you will. (-:
