-283 words today! Wooo---er, ah, well.

Yes, negative progress. OTOH, I've also made great strides as resolving my character balance issue. 4 chapters of revision, 5th chapter probably only needs a once-over as it's all Bad Guy POV, and then I should be able to tackle the as-yet-unfinished chapter 6 and get it fixed to my liking and wrapped up. And then maybe my wordcount will start going *up* again!

I have not yet done anything truly terrible to my main character, but I've certainly made his life exceptionally irritating thus far.

In other news, I spent a lovely mother's day lying in the hammock and reading Naomi Novik's His Majesty's Dragon. I've now finished four of the five Hugo nominees for Best Novel, with only the Michael Flynn left to go. My thoughts thus far: Watts' Blindsight was exceptionally well-written but relentlessly pessimistic. The Novik was entertaining but emotionally kind of flat. The Vinge was as brilliant as you'd expect but I thought left too much unresolved at the end. Stross's book I've already posted about -- gripping and well-written, but a little wobbly on characters. I'd be hard-pressed to name a favorite yet (not to mention premature), but I think this is one of the more solid selection of Hugo Nominees in a long time, at least for Novel; I'll tackle the shorter nominees eventually, once I've gotten some actual *writing* done again.
