I opened up my working file of Miledrop, took a deep breath, and excised 95% of that hateful chapter. The other 5% got pasted into a separate file for possible later re-inclusion. This drops me back to just shy of 39k.
This is the writer equivalent of ripping off that bandaid that's permanently affixed itself to all your arm-hair. It hurts, but it's best to get it over quick. Be brave! Get a good grip on those words, brace yourself, and RIP! Howl all you want once the deed is done. You are Writer, Hear Yourself cry like a Little Baby at Self-Inflicted Editing and Revel in the Mightiness of your Dedication! By now we all know that if you try picking at the corners, removing the offending material one measly, cowardly sentence at a time, you only prolong your own agony and end up with unsightly skin puckers, and who really wants that?
(I'm not sure what literary phenomena unsightly skin puckers equate to in my analogy, but I'm almost certain I've run across some in books from time to time.)
