My folks (who are at my house) just called me at work on their cellphone to tell me my phones are dead again in my house. Which, since I've already sent back the bad modem and the computer it was in is sitting here in my office at my feet right now, is very weird. So I'm gonna sneak home at lunchtime to try to figure out what's going on.

I'm gonna be really irritated if the modem wasn't bad after all.

Re: Antiquated telephone modem: Will you JUST GET CABLE already?! Stop fussing with telephone lines! In fact, you could probably get a deal with the cable company for Internet, cable, AND phone.

We get all three —- which includes unlimited phone calling to basically the entire U.S., broadband Internet, and the whole cable lineup except including one set of premium channels — for $129 per mo.

Yes, Comcast is the great satan. Loathsome, vile, repugnant — and their employees are unbearably stupid! But they offer the best product around here, so we feel like we have to deal with the devil. And we're ok with it. Once you go broadband you never go back!

I've got a box filled with both PCI and ISA modems that are gathering dust in the basement. If you'd like one sooner than 3 weeks / as a known working device / as a spare let me know, and I'll send you one (or more) forthwith.
