Wiscon! Report One
May. 26th, 2007 06:29 pmSo, we did in fact make it to Madison. (Note to self: next time, try NOT to hit Chicago at exactly 5:00pm on a Friday on a holiday weekend...)
Got in, got registered, pretty much crashed. Still ditzy and easily befuddled, but I ought to be back to my usual less-befuddled self just in time for the drive back.
Went to a few panels so far today. One was Women Writers You Should Know or somesuch. Many names were tossed out, some familiar, some not. There was a strong recommendation for Sherwood Smith's "Inda", and Susan Palwick's short story collection "The Fate of Mice". (I picked up the latter in the dealers room afterwards.) Also recommended were Rebecca Ore and Chris Moriarty, both of which I've heard of but not read.
Another panel I attended was about writer's block. I didn't really have super-high expectations of the panel (not because of the panelists, but just out of a certain pessimism that there's any easy fix), but it turned out to be a really fascinating discussion that talked a lot about neurology and how the brain works and reacts to stress, and some suggestions were given that I expect will end up being some of the more useful advice I've ever gotten as a writer. I'll post more about this at length later. The panelists were all very well chosen for this one. The only complaint I have is that some guy came and sat down right behind me and was obviously a heavy smoker because he *reeked*. I left with a fairly massive headache, and just came back to my room to take some ibuprofen.
Daughter has had a good time. She's been swimming, and they had an activity called "Take Things Apart" where they gave them some tools and a bunch of old electronic things like radios, etc., and let 'em go wild. What a great idea! Also, they have legos. So she's happy.
My roomie has vanished, probably to the movies, and I think I'm going to attempt to find food the kid will eat before stuff starts up again this evening.
