May. 12th, 2009 11:48 pmFor the last six or seven years, I've sworn that in celebration of turning the big four-oh I was going to take a hot air balloon ride. As it turned out, when I hit that particular milestone I had three week old twins at home, so I wasn't exactly thinking about it.
Last evening I went out on an errand w/ the babies, and as we came out of Target a pair of hot air balloons sailed right overhead. We followed them for a while in the car, stopped and took pictures a couple of times as they got lower and lower to the ground, and when it became clear they were coming down and it was pretty obvious where, we pulled up a safe distance away and watched the balloons land. Then I took A. over to see (K. was asleep in the car) and had a chat with the folks in the basket and it was wonderful. I didn't offer to help, because I had a small baby in my arms, but there have been two previous occasions now when I've randomly come across hot air balloons[1] and helped them squish the air out (by means of a thing very similar to what you use to squeeze goo up from the bottom of your toothpaste tube, only much much bigger) and pack it into their ground crew truck. I think I'm just in a good direction from the airfield where they take off, because they go over my house fairly often (the dog is afraid of them, mostly because of the sound of the burner.)
So anyway, ( hot air balloon pics )
Now of course I'm all re-enthused to take a balloon ride. Anyone wanna go with me? (-:

[1] once, a balloon landed in the farm field right down the street from my house. The other time, one nearly hit my car -- crossed over the road right in front of me as I was driving along, barely 3' off the ground, and kinda fell over in the field on the other side of the road. It was cool and fun to help, but MAN those baskets are freakin' *heavy*.
